About Us

A charming, eclectic family-owned and operated restaurant, Bistro 88 has been providing excellent upscale dining to Austinites for 10 years. Located just off the beaten path – a scant 3.5 miles from downtown Austin & 1.5 from Zilker Park – you’ll find a more-than-meets-the-eye experience. Our restaurant offers an elegant yet comfortable environment; our service is friendly, knowledgeable, and sincere. We like having a good time as well as having fun with our guests and appreciate getting to know people – calling them by name.  We come to work everyday aiming to please.

Our founder/co-owner/executive chef and charismatic leader, Jeff Liu, grew up in his family’s restaurant in Taipei, Taiwan. He developed his talent over many years as a restaurant manager and designer. His eclectic career has taken him from his early days in Taiwan to Guadalajara, Mexico to right here in the capital city of Austin, Texas.

In 1999, Jeff’s lifelong passion for food and wine (ok, the wine came a bit later as Taiwan isn’t exactly known for it’s viniferous exploits, but you get the idea) led this self-taught

chef along with his high school best friend and sidekick, James Hwang, to open the Euro-Asian restaurant Bistro 88. Within the first few months, it was recognized as a top-dining destination and has consistently been rated as a four-star restaurant by the Austin American-Statesman. Our menu runs the gamut from steaks, sushi, seafood, and game, all thoughtfully prepared through an Asian-fusion perspective and, of course, a little love.

In addition to his beloved Bistro 88, Jeff has recently taken his entrepreneurial spirit to mainland China, opening a Texas barbeque restaurant in the southeast coastal city of Xiamen. Jeff currently splits his time between the two sides of the globe. As he goes back and forth, you get the sense that when it comes to U.S.-Chinese relations, Jeff will one day be remembered right up there with Nixon.

We consider ourselves a secret little gem, if you don’t mind us saying. We’re a bit under the radar for most of Austin east of Mopac. We have people that love and swear by us, and we asked their permission to share our experience with just a few more of the masses. So here we are, presenting ourselves with humility and pride, aspirations and all.  We invite you and your guests to come see what some people say is really worth the short hop, skip and jump.

We look forward to seeing and serving you soon.
